Low shampoos are a softer, and more respectful with our hair, alternative to traditional shampoos. With their base without sulfates, they cleanse without drying, and their cream properties with oils strengthen and nourish our tresses. Their moisturizing power is great and they are meant for dry and damaged hair.

Idea

Sulfates are a chemicals generally added to cleansing products to maximize their power. In many cases this is a blessing since we can take advantage of this but in others it can be a little too harsh. Fragile hair, which need a rest after being periodically exposed to dyes and heat or that is naturally prone to this, may need something gentler than a shampoo with sulfates. After all, you can also find them in washing liquid, which may be a little discouraging to people who already fear for the well being of their tresses.

Collection

Why a washing cream?

These products are mainly meant for people with fragile hair. For some of you, lucky ones, this might be a term which doesn’t apply to you, but most of us have had some experiences with it. Maybe because you are a dye addict or a straightener fan, you know that some times you hair seems to be unable to take it up. Frizzy, unruly hair that has lost its health is a nightmare, and in those situations even washing it can look scary. Then fear no more! Washing creams don’t foam, they nourish your hair and leave it ready to be untangled. They don’t strip your color or your natural moisture, and they are far way gentler chemically speaking. Their cream texture makes them easier to apply and distribute, and also transforms your shower into a ritual!

How to use?

This is where the experience may differ from what you are accustomed to. Washing creams have different properties and therefore different characteristics, so pay attention to this!

1. Apply 10 to 15 pumps of the product to wet hair.

2. Massage well into the hair from scalp to ends and leave it in for three minutes.

3. Rinse carefully with water, untangling the hair with your fingers.

The Pros of Solid Shampoo

Since the restrictions about liquids on flights were implanted, travelling with your favorite shampoo seems to be a real problem.

The remedy for frequent travelers and for people on the go in general exists. In fact, it’s been around for more than fifty years: solid shampoos. “They were invented while experimenting with a new solid soap base in the form of wormy bits that generated a lot more foam than normal soaps. Afterwards, essential oils and natural ingredients such as fruits, flowers and herbs were added to the formula. This is how the solid shampoo was born, which was later patented as an invention.” explains Gloria Pavía, marketing director at Lush.

In other words: a soap bar for hair. Simple and handy. The washing ritual is similar to the one we know so well for cleaning our hands, and the effectiveness, equal to the one of a liquid product. “The bar can be lathered directly on wet hair to get foam, or be worked on wet hands to then apply the foam we created onto the hair. You then massage your scalp and mane as you would do with a liquid shampoo, rinse it and apply conditioner if needed. It’s important to let the shampoo bar air dry, so it doesn’t lose its properties with humidity.” From Herbal Bionature, another manufacturer for solid shampoos, it’s advised to do the washing “in the direction of hair growth to prevent tangles.” and to “rinse properly with plenty of water to eliminate all product traces and prevent frizz and stiffness“.

Why aren’t them easily found on shops? Pavía admits that “because of a patent matter, very few are produced yet. Also it’s difficult to change consumers habits, more accustomed to reach for the bottle than for a bar.” In Herbal Bionature, things are even more complicated. “We elaborate them with 100% natural pure oils, without sulphates, silicons or parabenes. A lot of conventional shampoos include these ingredients. They achieve short-therm good results, but they usually leave residues that, long-term, get accumulated over the hair and scalp giving it a dirty or grease appearance. Switching to one without all those chemicals implies a period of adaptation, because those residues often take a few washes to be completely eliminated. At the beginning you may feel a little hardness on your hair, but with time the hair shaft will acquire more softness, shine and strength.”

Now that you know how to use it, let’s see some of it advantages.

  1. Flying careless. If it goes on the suitcase it can’t explode or spill, and if not, you can carry it with your perfectly because it’s not a liquid.
  2. Less weight. To prevent overweight on your luggage or in your shopping bag. “One shampoo bar equals to three bottles of shampoo.” Herbal Bionature states. Do the math.
  3.  It saves space. Think of all the space you get for other products or goodies! And their shape make them really easy to apply.
  4. Bye bye, plastic. Forget about conventional bottles. The planet is happier! You are saving it tons of plastic and the air pollution that it’s generated during its manufacturing and transport. In Lush, they have the numbers: “Each year we sell 1.900.000 solid shampoos. This saves the production and transport of 5.700.000 plastic bottles, or which is the same, 142 tons of plastic less.” An eco-friendly gesture that prevents 484 tons of CO2, the gas responsible for global warming, to be released into the atmosphere.
  5. It’s more natural. Since they contain very little or no water, there’s no need for synthetic preservatives. “In that dry environment, bacteria can’t reproduced. They can be stored for two years and a half in perfect conditions.” Pavía states.
  6. Saving. Each bar last for 80 to 100 uses. This would mean three bottles of conventional shampoo, that’s why all distributors agree that “though in the first buy they may seem more expensive, they are cheaper long-term.”
