Met Gala 2019 ‘Camp: Notes on Fashion’: Top Looks of the Night

One more time we all virtually attend the most remarkable night of the year for the fashion industry: the Met Gala.

After last’s years dazzling presentation of the ‘Heavenly Bodies‘ (a Met Gala which we also covered) theme and creations, it was announced that the theme for next year was going to be ‘camp’. More specifically, ‘Camp: Notes on fashion‘, which is based on the title that Susan Sontag gave to her essay on the subject, ‘Notes on Camp‘. If you weren’t aware of that concept, you may had suffered like myself a little moment of panic and confusion last year., when the theme was announced along with the co chairs for this year’s Met Gala: Alessandro Michele, Serena Williams, Lady Gaga and Harry Styles. At first, you may have thought that it was a waste of such an exceptional co chair as Lady Gaga for a theme that sounded more close to ‘camping’ than anything else and that therefore didn’t look that promising. But it turns out the choice couldn’t have been better.

In this essay that we mentioned, publishes in 1964, the writer proceeded to describe ‘camp’ by enumerating fifty eight things that were in fact ‘camp’, among which we can find things like The Lake of the Swans, Caravaggio’s Tenebrist paintings, Mae West’s movies or Flash Gordon comics. At this point it is obvious that ‘camp’ is a much more deep concept that we could have imagined and that it couldn’t have been as easily described as last year’s theme, and that we can discover a lot if we plan on learning about this movement. But long story short, suddenly Lady Gaga seemed like the perfect choice.

Camp can be aesthetically summarized into extravagance, the mix or arts and reference, pop culture, opulence and eclecticism.

Since I find that ‘camp’ is such an interesting subject that is open to so much debate and can catch the attention of Arts academics and enthusiast, I’ll leave here a link to Susan Sontag’s essay and we’ll proceed to see the most standing looks of the Met Gala night.

Versace Fall 2018 Ready-To-Wear Collection and Fashion Show

Today I bring you the Versace Fall 2018 Ready-To-Wear collection, where Donatella has done an outstanding work in reassuring her position as one of the greatest masters of fashion design. Versace is as you may know by now one of my most loved fashion houses, a surely one of the most iconic through the history of haute couture.

VERSACE DEATHLESS VOGUE (1)VERSACE DEATHLESS VOGUE (3)

As we talked about in the previous article about Versace, the previous collection that Versace launched (SS 2018) was a bomb was an outstanding work of art honoring the style and passion of the creator of the house, Gianni Versace. His sister Donatella, now vice president of Versace and chief designer or the brand, was the one that orchestrated this beautiful homage to one of the most creative and innovative brand in the history of fashion design. The show and the collection were a startling success, and we were all really expectant about Donatella’s next move after such an unique revelation.

And she sure impressed everyone when she went back to her purest style in a stunning new collection that honors her own creativity as much as the last one honored the one of her brother.

The Clans of Versace

No wonder about why the collection was called ‘The Clans of Versace’, because at this point, Versace is the royal family of couture and this was the time for the queen. A lot of the pillars of the Versace imaginery are present in this collection that combines classicism with modernity in a magnificent way. Classic lines and materials are contrasted with highly pigmented primary colors, patterns, plaid, accessories and a lot of trends of the moment.
The personal trademark met modernism. And it was astounding.

But let’s see the whole collection, enjoy the show!

Classicism

The classical line of this collection is expressed in muted downs nude brown colors, always so associated with fall and elegance. The use of leather, metal accessories (primary gold) and fine fabric remind us of the less excessive side of the concept. These colors and material will continue to appear in the collection as a leif motiv of classicism through Donatella’s different creations.

Plaid

These two will almost always will be accompanied by the star of the show: plaid in primary colors that will steal the light in designs where bright yellow is a form of gold.

Primary Colors

The primary colors derive are built into different designs and the plaid will even turn monochrome leaving yellow aside in some stunning pieces.

Black leather and Gold: the Belt

One of the main accessories and center of part of the collection is a Versace icon: the belt. Black leather and gold, the classical importance of this piece will be of high importance again, a pillar of the Versace imaginery.

Two of my favorite creations were these two belt-centered beauties of a design, two black dresses that speak Versace and couture so loud that it’s hard to resist. The elegance of these two looks is just sublime.

Silk, Patters, Satin and Corsets

Silk drapes also had a leading role in the collection. Colorful patterns full of pop art references and animal print are places over luxurious fabric with a great femininity to it. The corset, another pillar, makes its first appearance in a sultry skirt over a Versace white t-shirt. Plaid and corsets rule this fantasy of designs unified by the emblematic Versace belt.

Luxury and Sultryness: the Artistry

These classical luxurious designs give the welcome to the show a the most exquisite part of the collection. Sultriness is now a must.

All the show is transformed into an even more exquisite state. Every theme used in the collection till now is masterfully mix together to bring the most stunning looks of the show.

These last two looks are also one of my favorites of the whole collection, as they express they whole concept in an exquisite way. Primary colors in gorgeous fabrics and finishes are hugged by black and luxury. Belts and shoes. I have to say that this is the collection with which Donatella has made history for me. She already proved her amazing artistry and creative power in her last collection, which as you may know by now I considered art. But not only that, she has had the ability to change directions completely after that and still amaze us with the path she followed.

This whole collection is simply stunning and at the same time it has a unity spirit, a deep belief in the concepts over which it is built. It’s sultry, it’s exquisite, it’s Versace. It’s art. The title of the collection ‘The Clans of Versace’ implies to me that she honored and presented her brother before, and now she is presenting her side, the other part of Versace. All in all I find it a very intelligent twist after the last collection and an absolutely amazing work of art. Everything is just so classy and unique. It has the Versace signature written across every piece.

Accessories and Shoes

This has been one of the very few fashion shows / collections in which I also fall in love with a lot of the accessories, including (and specially) shoes of course. It was obvious that, being the belt one of the most iconic elements of the house, the accessories in Versace collections are always important, but these ones had my heart. A lot of leather, either in elegant high heels, platforms or heeled boots, with metallic attachments that speak of an aggressive femininity, power and control.

The details and the love put into the design of every accessory is as intricate and delicate as in the outfits. The shoes are just beyond elegance for me and I probably love every pair in the collection, which is not really usual.

And that’s it, the collection looked wonderful to me, it really makes me fall in love even harder with the house and when that happens you know it was a good collection.

Beauty

As usual, they use very natural looking makeup, something that make the models look flawless but that doesn’t distract the attention from the creations. The classical middle parting with the front pieces of hair tucked behind the ears or neck was also seen really often in this show, I hairstyle that now I love to call the ‘Versace’ because they use it so much and it looks so elegant and simple.

The makeup and hair all in all let the magic of the collection, including jewelry, shine through.

And that was all! I really hope you enjoyed this collection as much as me, I really wish I could sport even the cheaper pair of shoes of this collection but that is not happening any time soon. Even though, they were astounding!

I hope to see you around here soon, thank you for reading!

Purple Rain: New Regal Hue

Purple is the new black.
Step aside, blue, red and green, the new basic color for elegance is this iconic and unique blend.

purple-27
Autumn and winter are all about elegance and luxury.

No matter what your style is, the cold always suits our looks since it allows all of us to mix and match beyond our greatest fantasies. Deep hues, rich textures, precious metals and stones, black leather, polished make-up and perfect haircuts are some of the basic features of the beauty of autumn and winter fashion.
And today one of those deep hues is the star: purple.

Purple is conquering the world of fashion. Not just in street fashion or couture, but also make-up, cosmetics, arts and design. It is the perfect union of fantasy and royalty, the naive vibe of dreams and folktales and the sultry elegance of the old continent. Its versatility also covers the new century and its neon glow: techno, glam rock and the holographic wave all over. Purple is like a sci-fi fairy tale, classicism meets disco. Welcome to the purple reign.

The connection of purple color with luxury comes from far back in history.

Traditionally, it was only worn by royalty, aristocracy and members of the Church, due to the cost of purple dyes and therefore, clothing of this color. In the nineteenth century the shade mauve was created while a chemistry student tried to make synthetic quinine, which became fashionable after Queen Victoria wore a gown of this color. Shortly after this, the industrial production of some purple dyes finally settled its place among arts and fashion, managing to reach all social classes. At the end of the century, this color became then really popular among painters, like Pre-Raphaelites and later, Gustav Klimt.

Finally, in the 20th century, the oneiric quality of the color was achieved during the 60s, 70s and 80s.
During the first two decades, it became associated with psychedelics and musicians, as well as with counterculture. Some examples are Jimi Hendrix, with his song Purple Haze from 1967, or Deep Purple, the popular English rock band which formed in 1968. In the 80s, the color appeared in the song and album by Prince, Purple Rain (1984). In pop culture, it soon was one of the favorite colors for video games, still nowadays.

Couture

Winter is almost upon us and with its regal trend the use of purple in fashion collections is reaching a peak. It is being seen specially in rich textures like brocades, suede, lace, patterns and precious metals embroideries.

Beauty

Make-up and hair have also jumped into the bandwagon. Special effects are the key to this trend, metallic finishes and glitter rule over minimalist or matte looks. Holographic hues that turn to blue, pink or teal are also really popular.

Arts

The union between magenta and cyan, the two colors most used in artistic direction of movies right now, purple symbolizes uniqueness and infinite possibilities. It contains everything and at the same time can mean emptiness. The alpha and the omega.

Glitter Mania

Glitter is back! Autumn is already too dark, so give your look the sparkle we inherited from the 70s glam!

If the fashion war between the 80s and the 90s that we are currently experienced wasn’t enough, another decade enters the game. While the 60s rocked last summer and are as recurrent as always in make up trends, this year’s charm are the 70s. With the departure of our beloved hero, David Bowie, his style and spirit has been channeled since in every fashion innovation. Though glam rock wasn’t always necessarily so out of space, they didn’t name it ‘glam’ for nothing. He created the maximum expression of it and the whole world has been honoring his memory in the form of style for the whole year. Want to see some examples?

Many famous artists started this fever by paying homage to the man who fell to earth, recreating some of his most memorable looks and iconic moments. Not that he wasn’t already a huge influence in fashion, music and arts. A real star man.

The this turned into a whole fashion industry earthquake: the 70s were back more powerful than ever. Glitter, metallic, silver, colorful make up, and over everything, the polished style, rule all over the kingdom, spiced up by the pale, thin, out of this world look and mysterious personality that Bowie left us. Here you can see some runway pieces that fit this awesome movement.

The trend then finally joined the 80s and 90s in the clothing stores. You can already find some of these looks in your city center, luckily! If you don’t know where to start to rock this look, I’ll give you my three musts for embracing this trend.

Metallic Jacket:

The perfect item that fits all three decades, it can be styled into any of them just knowing what to add to the look. More worn out finishes give more of an 80s or 90s Pink Floyd Quicksilver look, while the real metallic or even glittery ones magically transport you to the 70s and their disco vibe. Indispensable for night outs and concerts, combined with dark colors and a color block make-up to be the real star down town.

Platforms:

Naive but daring, choose some bold and colorful platforms to go with your eclectic look! The 70s were the decade were you could mix up Victorian blouses with superhero pants and intergalactic shoes. We were all kings and queens of our own planet and the real statement of a fashion attitude resides always in the shoes! Platforms are the true soul of the disco world, so search for the most appealing ones. There are never enough effects, metallic, glitter, neon, holographic, animal print – combine two or more and you won’t leave anyone indifferent. Is this a maybe-too-much trend for some people? Yes. But I love it.

Sheer Stockings:

To finish polishing your look, and to go with everything we have mentioned, don’t forget to pack up some cool vibe stockings. Wearing them with high heels and platforms is back and skinny cut pants give them a powerful role in your look. They combine perfectly with your glam rock shoes, remember, the more the better! I personally like how colorful net stockings look with glitter shoes and also sheer shimmery dark stockings with metallic platforms or sandals. This is definitely the winning match of this season and I’ll leave you with some inspirations from now and always:

Now that you have the key to be dressed for success go burn the city down with your killer glam look. The night is young and we are too!

Ballets Russes

Forever dancing. Ballet, the art that most perfectly represents the beauty and exquisiteness of fashion, floods this season’s trends.

Couture has always been in love with the Russians vibes, from royalty to folktales, and ballet is a crush that never gets old.

  • Fashion

Russia is the perfect combination of magical, cold and regal and it breathes luxury and classicism.

This autumn and winter, it comes back to us in ballet inspired fashion, from accessories to shoes, decoration, clothing, jewelery or even furniture. The looks shine with delicacy, every piece seem exclusively design and made to fit you, preserving the richness of the concept. Gold, silver, precious stones, soft earth tones, white and black are the bases of this inspirarion, along with rich deep dark colors such as green, blue or red, in shades that reminds of royal gowns.

Dream of snow and palaces with these runway looks:

  • Beauty

Equally, make-up trends follow the same pattern to fit the exquisite cold touch of this fashion. A dark bold lip combined with pale and flawless skin is the key to this look. The make-up has to be perfectly applied, no smudges though the eye shadows had to be well blended out. The new make-up trend fever, the strobing, pairs perfectly with what you want to achieve – use one with a frosted finish to enhance the cold feeling of the look. Aim for cool tones, soft pinks, silvery finishes and rich appearances. Good worked lashes are also a must, deep black, with volume and length, polished and with the mascara perfectly applied. Berry and earthy tones, always deep, for eyes and lips are the choice for this look.

Sort your favorites out of these and replicate the high fashion feeling:

  • Jewelry

Think of the Romanov and you have your answer: crowns, diamonds, necklaces, earrings, all things sultry and fine. Delicacy and elegance is the key to achieve this looks without looking ordinary or faux.
